Gluten-free Valentine’s Day Candy
Valentine’s Day is a time to celebrate love and indulge in sweet treats with your special someone(s). For those with celiac disease or other gluten-related disorders, finding gluten-free candy & chocolates can be a bit tricky. Let’s guide you through the process of selecting gluten-free Valentine’s Day candy, highlighting what to look for in labels and how to ensure a safe and delicious gluten-free celebration.
Understanding Gluten and Unexpected Sources
Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, rye, and their derivatives. When it comes to chocolates and candy, some brands contain gluten, while others do not. The best way to know if a food contains gluten is by reading the food label.
Three Easy Steps to select GF Valentine’s Day Candy:
1. Look for a GF certification – a product that’s been certificatied by a third party may provide you with added confidence in the GF foods you buy.
• Look for Celiac Canada’s GF trusted GFCP trademark on food products
• Use the CCA GF product finder to find your favorite or soon-to-be favorite GF certified products.
2. Look for a GF claim – a product that has a GF claim contains 20ppm or less of gluten and is safe for people with celiac disease.
• Please refer to Health Canada’s resource on Gluten-free claims for more information:
3. Read the ingredients list – look for B.R.O.W – barley, rye, regular oats and wheat – ingredients. If any of these ingredients are listed on the label, the product contains gluten and is not safe for those with celiac disease.
