Survey Reveals Top Canadian Universities for Gluten-Free Accommodations

In a recent survey, students and parents shared their experiences with gluten-free accommodations at various post-secondary institutions.

 

The ranking was based on:

  1. Overall experience attending with Celiac Disease
  2. Access to gluten-free (GF) food on campus
  3. The university’s ability to accommodate GF needs

Top University for Gluten-Free Needs: University of Guelph

The University of Guelph was recognized for its effective strategies, support systems, and gluten-free food options, ensuring a more inclusive and accommodating environment for students with celiac disease.

 

Key Survey Findings:

 

  • 70% of respondents stated the university was only able to accommodate their gluten-free needs a little or not at all.
  • 75% of respondents said there is not a good selection of gluten-free food on campus.
  • Over 50% of respondents reported a negative or very negative experience living with celiac disease or other gluten-related disorders at their university.
  • 70% of respondents found it difficult to access gluten-free food on campus.
  • The average dining hall experience was rated 2.5 out of 5.
  • Only 12% of respondents felt that dining hall staff had knowledge of celiac disease.
