Celiac Canada Advances Advocacy on Affordability, Food Safety, and Tax Reform

Even when Parliament is not in session, our advocacy work doesn’t stop. We continue to press forward on the key issues that matter most to our community: the affordability of gluten-free food, tax reforms to ease the financial burden, access to safe food for vulnerable Canadians, and raising awareness of celiac disease among the public and healthcare providers.

Recently, Celiac Canada met with senior policy officials in the Ministers’ offices of both Health and Agriculture and Agri-Foods to highlight the urgent needs of those living with celiac disease. In addition, our Advocacy Working Group submitted formal pre-budget recommendations to both the Standing Committee for Finance and Economic Affairs and the Ministry of Finance, ensuring that the voices of our community are represented in upcoming decisions. You can read our full submission here.

We are also grateful for the ongoing leadership of MP Sonia Sidhu, Chair of the Parliamentary Celiac Caucus. At our recent Celiac Family Day event, MP Sidhu met with our Executive Director, Melissa Secord, and Advocacy Working Group Chair, Roberta Kramchynsky. She has once again committed to sponsoring another parliamentary petition to maintain pressure on much-needed tax reforms related to the incremental cost of gluten-free food.

What's Next?

Our team will continue to meet with policymakers and push for fair recognition of the costs and challenges faced by Canadians with celiac disease. These conversations are crucial to building momentum for change, and we’ll keep our community updated on progress.
