What the CFIA’s New Rules Mean for “Made in Canada” Labels

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has adjusted its regulations to protect Canadian consumers and ensure retailers are using accurate and truthful statements about products made in Canada.

In a recent bulletin by CFIA, “If a food business chooses to use the maple leaf on packaging, retail shelves or online, the CFIA recommends that an accompanying domestic content statement (for example, Product of Canada, Made in Canada, or other content claim) is placed in close proximity to the maple leaf to clarify what is meant by the use of the maple leaf, and make sure it will not mislead the consumer.”

Regulations include both in-store and online retailing.

The move was a result of increased consumer complaints related to the origin claims on advertisements, bulk produce and food labels.
