May is Celiac Awareness Month
Gluten-free food safety should never be left to chance!
Maria, newly diagnosed with celiac disease, stood in the grocery aisle, turning the package repeatedly in her hands. She wanted to be sure. She looked and saw the dreaded “May contain wheat” statement. Maria worried: “Is this safe to eat?”
How was she to know?
You know better than most – when you live with celiac disease, mistakes can be harmful. Guessing is risky.
Being "glutened" hurts.
Unfortunately, “May Contain” statements are entirely voluntary in Canada and around the world. This is just one of the many challenges facing people like Maria who live with celiac disease. We’re working to fix this – but we can’t do it alone. We need you.
Celiac Canada is working on your behalf to keep you safe by:
- Working with the government and food manufacturers to strengthen and clarify “This product may contain…” labelling — so warnings are clear, risk-assessed, and consistent.
- Developing label reading guides and educational resources to help people stay safe in and out of the home.
- Partnering with manufacturers to help them become formally Certified Gluten-Free – a designation that means they’re held to rigorous, science-based standards you can trust.
- Working with schools to better educate them about celiac disease and what kids with the disease can and cannot consume.
- Providing an easy-to-access, reliable Gluten-Free Food Finder on our website to help families shop with confidence instead of fear.

It’s the ideal time to donate and help fund the work that is keeping you safe – at the grocery store, at the table, and in everyday life.
Without your continued financial help, we cannot do everything needed to protect you and others living with celiac disease.
And great news! Your gift will be doubled by a $25,000 matching grant. The sooner you send your gift, the more likely it is to be matched.
Thank you for standing with the celiac community — and for helping ensure food safety is never left to chance.
